New MacPro Nehalem and 10To Raid5 Array

I bought a dual 2GHz Powermac G5 when it first came out, almost 6 years ago. I never had a problem with it. It’s still working as a charme. But, when you’re working with HD footage, it gets a real pain !
One of my best friend always tell me : « buy, don’t wait ». But I chosed to wait a little bit for the new Macpro Nehalem. And it finaly happened : http://www.apple.com/macpro/
Building my config was simple : best possible but not crazily expensive. I finaly settled on a dual CPU, 2.66GHz (8 threads in total), the ATI 4870 video card, wifi, bluetooth and wireless keyboard, which is for sale at 50€ (pickup in Paris). The RAM amount was a real challenge… I wanted 8Gb.
As you may know, new Nehalem processor have a 3 lane memory controler. The Macpro have 4 slots of ram per CPU.
8 Gb = 2x2Go per cpu or 4x1Gb per cpu.
Problem is, to use the whole CPU ram throughoutput, which is the key point on the nehalem, you have to use 3 memory modules.
I decided to use 3x2Gb per cpu, having a final HUGE 12Go of memory ![]()
Hopefully, the RAM modules for the macpro are really « cheap » actually. I used the Apple ram extension for 180€. I could have chosed to go with the reseller’s ram for 130€… but I think it’s better to have 6 identical RAM modules instead of 4+2. Remember RAM modules work by 3 at a time.
So, you’re asking, where are the picture… There you go :

The HD card
Things never change alone. Just one month ago, BlackMagic Design released it’s new Decklink card, the Decklink HD Extreme 3.

I just installed it in the mac and installed the driver. I will try it today.
First visible change : you have a new monitor in the monitor preference pane. While this seems to be cool, it is a serious problem when using a Wacom intuos or the special corner feature to get exposé or dashboard.
More on this later
The Raid card
As for the Decklink card, the Raid card is a new one too : Highpoint Rocketraid 4322.
Most of people used the 3522, which is almost the same, with less RAM and a slower CPU (800MHz instead of 1200MHz). While it seems no one sell the 4322 card in France, I had to buy it from Germany. I think I had a real good price, far lower than other cards : 530€.

See both the Decklink and the raid card in the mac :

Here is the back of the computer. See the HD-SDI IN/OUT of the Decklink on top, then the IN/OUT HDMI. Then the two Mini-SAS input of the RAID card, then the video card, with one DVI and one mini-displayport.
The RAID Case
You may ask what can I plug in the mini-SAS raid card… In fact, many things ![]()
I chosed to use a 8 disk enclosure with mini-SAS inputs from Enhance Technologies.
I chosed the E8MS as it have mini-SAS input and accept S-ATA drives. Note that you can have the SAME box, in light grey instead of dark grey, from ProAVIo.
The proAvIo box is not sold in France. I had to call the English reseller… which wasn’t OK to sell the box alone, without drives. Of course, their drives were far more expensive (special RAID ones, you can also find it everywhere).
I finaly found a company selling the Enhance Tech model in France, for around 500€, and empty !
I went to the « rue Montgallet » where all the computer parts resellers are, and bought 8×1.5To Seagate drives. This will give me a huge 10.5 To of storage !!
Moreover, it seems the 1.5To disks have a better throughoutput than the 1To ones. And they have the 5 years waranty intead of 3 years for the 1To.
I will try to do a step by step of the RAId configuration and add some RAID tests, but for now, I’m sad to say the RAID card is not working !
The RAID card is managed through a web interface. I can see the drives, create the RAID array and mount it. Then, the initialization fail. Then, the RAID card stop responding and the whole system hang.
I also had strange USB power loss some time. Don’t know if this is related to the RAID card.
Two last notes on what Apple can improve :
- the mini displayport of the video card : WHY ? and why not displayport instead of mini ?
- the RAID card, on slot 2, is just over the video card fan… There should be more space between the two PCI slots so the display card can breath.

Hello, ive made some similar configuration with mac pro, high point raid card, black magic HD Extreme card and external raid case. When i plug raid cart into 2nd PCIe slot (next to graphic card) raid doesnt work properly. I solved my problemy by pluging raid card into 3rd slot and HD Extreme into 4th slot. After that everything is working great. I hope you will solve your problem soon.

Hi and thanks for your comment.
I also tried many positions, also without the HDLink card. Nothing helped.
As stated on many Seagate forum threads, the problem really lies in the hard-drive firmware.
Then only warning I can give is : DON’T USE SEAGATE DRIVES FOR RAID !!
Could you please comment on which drives you are using ?
Thanks.

Hi ,im using this model of Western Digital hard drive: WD5002ABYS with no problems. But i thing that rocket raid has HDD compatibility list, where you can find supported drives.
Im also using another computer (PC) as data storage with 9 x Samsung 1TB drives in raid5 without any problems. Disks i used are Samsung HD103UJ.

In fact, the seagate drive was listed as compatible at RocketRaid, for this card and others. Only the firmware version was different.
Who can think a disk drive firmware can make it compatible or not ?
Actually, Highpoint just removed the reference to the Seagate drive from the list (as did Drobo and other manufacturers)….
I now have 8 1.5Tb drives I can’t use, and have to buy 8 others. I’m just waiting for the new to come 2Tb western digital… Hope this will work !

WD 2TB Raid Edition 4 GP WD2002FYPS, SATA/300, 7200ot, 64MB cache
This model looks like youre best choise from aktual WD drives offer.

exactly… Just have to wait for the release date, schedulled in september. Until then… I’m working with the 1.5Tb seagate inside the MacPro (no RAID, no speed, no space)
I’ll never buy Seagate again. I urge you all to do the same !

I used Seagate drives for long time without problems. I have good experience with two seagate drives in striping that im using in external case coneceted to my iMac by firewire cable. It works perfectly, no erors, no conection problems. Im using this striping area as scratch disk for projects in final cut expres.

Of course Seagate have some drives working fine. It seems the « ES » (pro) series are fine. But the 7200.11 (and 7200.12) in 1Tb and 1.5Tb are having A LOT of problems. This is really model and firmware related. Trust me, it’s the drives having problems, not the RAID, card or cable.
BTW, I’m used to RAID systems as my main job is UNIX system engineering
But any comment’s welcome

Ok youre the profesional.

I was looking for the new 2Tb drives, from Western Digital RE4-GP (already availlable) and the future Hitachi 7K2000.
After reading speed test of the WD (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=703&type=expert&pid=1) beeing ready to buy it, I came accros this thread at Qnap : http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13517
Near the botton of the first page, feathermagic, using the same config as mine, is saying that they are not « compatible » for video editting. This is also acknoledge by WD.
Check the AJA test at http://www.magicfeatherinc.com/index.htm/speed-test.html
It seems to be due to the « smart green intellipower » function that slows down the disk to save power, which is not good in a RAID array.
Really supprising for a Enterprise grade special RAID edition
I really wonder what manufacturer’s think when they use the word RAID….
So, my last and only choice in a « more than 1Tb drive » for my array is to wait for the Hitachi 7K2000 drive to be out (which is fine, I always buy Hitachi drives and never had any issue with it).
Wait and see

Hey prune – What is your status on the raid? I have the exact same story as you. I am wondering what to do. I can stripe my 8 drives together as a raid0 or raid5 and the system works using quick intialize, but eventually it will hang up and I also lose USB keyboard and mouse.
I also have Seagates – 1.0TB. Have you heard from Highpoint tech support at all? They seemed to ingore my situation. They took my info and never got back to me. Are you just waiting for a Hitachi drive to come out? Do you know personally of any other drives that worked successfully with this system?
Any thoughts or comments would be VERY appreciated. I also am using these drives for broadcast video work (Discovery Channel, etc)

Hi,
The status hasn’t changed since. I had a lot of posting on the Seagate’s forum, where many many people are having the exact same problem with the latest seagate drive/firmware. Some of them stated they will never use Seagate again, which is also my case
So, yes, I’m waiting for the Hitachi drive to be released. It seems the new 2To WesternDigital drive is also compatible (taken from the supported drive list of Highpoint or EnhencedTechnologie, I don’t remember), but as the manufacturer seems to be saying it is not, I will not go in this way.
Next Hitachi will be a 2To drive, really expensive (200/300€), but surely really fast. My idea is to buy only 3 of them and test it. If it’s OK I will start like that, if throughoutput is good enough. If not OK, I will take them back to the reseller.
Highpoint and the RAID card vendor also replied to my emails, stating that « you could have problems with seagate drives as they don’t support SSC ». Seagate claimes SSC to be disabled and that should not be a problem. The answer lies somwhere in bitween. Highpoint never answerd my last email, and the seagate drive, as far as I remember, was taken out of the compatibility list.
Let me know if you have any finding…

I just bought 8 new Hitachi HDS72202, 2Tb, 32Mo of cache. This is working fine with my setup. See new post soon on my blog for benchs.
NEVER USE SEAGATE DRIVES EVER AGAIN !!!!
12 décembre 2009 - 02:54
Just got 7 of the Hitachi HDS72202 drives. 3 DOA and another with smart errors after 3 hours. Never had a DOA with Seagate!
12 décembre 2009 - 06:40
Then go with Seagate…. But don’t say you are not warned
Maybe you just had a bad Hitachi serie. With Seagate, on the other hand, it’s a flaw. Don’t expect it to work AT ALL.
