Then go with Seagate.... But don't say you are not warned :)
Maybe you just had a bad Hitachi serie. With Seagate, on the other hand, it's a flaw. Don't expect it to work AT ALL.

Hi,

The status hasn't changed since. I had a lot of posting on the Seagate's forum, where many many people are having the exact same problem with the latest seagate drive/firmware. Some of them stated they will never use Seagate again, which is also my case :)
So, yes, I'm waiting for the Hitachi drive to be released. It seems the new 2To WesternDigital drive is also compatible (taken from the supported drive list of Highpoint or EnhencedTechnologie, I don't remember), but as the manufacturer seems to be saying it is not, I will not go in this way.
Next Hitachi will be a 2To drive, really expensive (200/300€), but surely really fast. My idea is to buy only 3 of them and test it. If it's OK I will start like that, if throughoutput is good enough. If not OK, I will take them back to the reseller.
Highpoint and the RAID card vendor also replied to my emails, stating that "you could have problems with seagate drives as they don't support SSC". Seagate claimes SSC to be disabled and that should not be a problem. The answer lies somwhere in bitween. Highpoint never answerd my last email, and the seagate drive, as far as I remember, was taken out of the compatibility list.

Let me know if you have any finding...

Hey prune - What is your status on the raid? I have the exact same story as you. I am wondering what to do. I can stripe my 8 drives together as a raid0 or raid5 and the system works using quick intialize, but eventually it will hang up and I also lose USB keyboard and mouse.
I also have Seagates - 1.0TB. Have you heard from Highpoint tech support at all? They seemed to ingore my situation. They took my info and never got back to me. Are you just waiting for a Hitachi drive to come out? Do you know personally of any other drives that worked successfully with this system?
Any thoughts or comments would be VERY appreciated. I also am using these drives for broadcast video work (Discovery Channel, etc)

I was looking for the new 2Tb drives, from Western Digital RE4-GP (already availlable) and the future Hitachi 7K2000.
After reading speed test of the WD (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=703&type=expert&pid=1) beeing ready to buy it, I came accros this thread at Qnap : http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13517

Near the botton of the first page, feathermagic, using the same config as mine, is saying that they are not "compatible" for video editting. This is also acknoledge by WD.
Check the AJA test at http://www.magicfeatherinc.com/index.htm/speed-test.html
It seems to be due to the "smart green intellipower" function that slows down the disk to save power, which is not good in a RAID array.
Really supprising for a Enterprise grade special RAID edition :)
I really wonder what manufacturer's think when they use the word RAID....

So, my last and only choice in a "more than 1Tb drive" for my array is to wait for the Hitachi 7K2000 drive to be out (which is fine, I always buy Hitachi drives and never had any issue with it).

Wait and see

Of course Seagate have some drives working fine. It seems the "ES" (pro) series are fine. But the 7200.11 (and 7200.12) in 1Tb and 1.5Tb are having A LOT of problems. This is really model and firmware related. Trust me, it's the drives having problems, not the RAID, card or cable.
BTW, I'm used to RAID systems as my main job is UNIX system engineering :)
But any comment's welcome :)

I used Seagate drives for long time without problems. I have good experience with two seagate drives in striping that im using in external case coneceted to my iMac by firewire cable. It works perfectly, no erors, no conection problems. Im using this striping area as scratch disk for projects in final cut expres.

exactly... Just have to wait for the release date, schedulled in september. Until then... I'm working with the 1.5Tb seagate inside the MacPro (no RAID, no speed, no space)
I'll never buy Seagate again. I urge you all to do the same !
